How to Appear in Gemini Answers

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. When it answers questions about the current world, including local businesses, it can use Google Search to ground its answer and show where the information came from. That ties your visibility in Gemini closely to your visibility in Google.

Grounding with Google Search

Google's developer documentation describes "Grounding with Google Search", a feature that lets Gemini models use web search results and return the sources used, in a structure called grounding metadata (Gemini API: Grounding with Google Search). SearchSignal uses exactly this feature to query Gemini, and we read the returned sources to decide whether your site was cited.

Two things follow. First, if Google's search systems cannot find or trust your site, a grounded Gemini answer is unlikely to use it. Second, the Gemini app and the Gemini API are not identical products, so what you see in the app may differ from what we measure. We say so on the methodology page.

Gemini is not AI Overviews

Both involve Google and AI, but they are different surfaces. AI Overviews are summaries on the results page. Gemini is a chat assistant. We report them as separate scores, because a business can be present in one and absent from the other. For the Search side, read our guide to AI Overviews for local businesses.

What Google-Extended does and does not do

Google-Extended is a robots.txt token. Google's crawler documentation says it lets site owners manage whether content crawled by Google is used for Gemini training and for grounding in the Gemini apps and Gemini API, and that it does not affect inclusion in Google Search (Google: overview of crawlers and fetchers). Read the current text before deciding, since the wording has been updated over time.

The practical point: if you disallow Google-Extended, you are choosing to limit use of your content by Gemini. If your goal is to appear in Gemini answers, do not block it without understanding the trade-off. Blocking Googlebot would be far worse, because it removes you from Search.

Steps that help

1. Be solid in Google Search first

Verify your site in Google Search Console, submit your sitemap, and fix indexing problems. Pages that are not indexed are invisible to Search-based grounding.

2. Build out your Google Business Profile

For local questions, Google's own business data is a major source. Choose accurate categories, keep hours and phone current, add photos, answer questions, and respond to reviews.

3. Make your site state the facts

Services, areas, prices or how pricing works, credentials, and contact details should appear in text. Add LocalBusiness structured data that matches the visible page (guide).

4. Answer questions in full

Write pages that directly answer the questions customers ask. Use clear headings and put the answer first. Grounded answers pull passages, so each passage should make sense alone.

5. Keep information consistent off-site

Search-based answers cross-check. When your listings on directories agree with your website, you are easier to name with confidence.

6. Be active where your customers look

If your customers watch videos, a YouTube channel with accurate titles and descriptions may be indexed by Google. If they read local news, community pages and press mentions help. Do only what is real for your business.

How to check yourself

Ask Gemini the questions a customer would ask: best provider of your service in your city, a recommendation for a specific job, a comparison. Do it in a private window and a few times. Record whether your name appears, whether sources are shown, and who else is named. Remember that responses vary and personal context can change them.

What to expect

Changes in your site or listings show up in Search over days to weeks, and any effect on Gemini follows the same timing. Nobody can promise a mention. Measure before you change things, wait, and measure again with the same questions. SearchSignal's monitoring plan does this weekly, and the free check gives you a starting point across five engines.

Common questions

Do I need a Google Business Profile?

For a local business, it is one of the most useful things to have, since Google's own business data is a core source for local questions. It is not a requirement, but skipping it leaves a gap.

Will blocking Google-Extended hurt my Google ranking?

Google's documentation says it does not affect inclusion in Search. It does govern use for Gemini training and grounding, so understand the trade-off.

Is the Gemini app the same as the API?

No. The app has its own settings and personalization. We query the API with grounding on, and say so in our methodology.

How often does Gemini's answer change?

It can change between runs and over time. Test repeatedly and compare patterns, not single answers.
