Does Claude Search the Web? How It Picks Sources

Yes, Claude can search the web. Anthropic offers web search in the Claude apps and as a tool for developers, and the answers can include citations. What Anthropic does not publish is a ranking recipe, so be wary of anyone who sells one.

What Anthropic documents

Anthropic's developer documentation describes a web search tool that lets Claude run searches during a response and cite what it found (Anthropic docs: web search tool). Results come back with page titles, URLs, and cited passages. SearchSignal uses this tool to query Claude, and reads the returned sources to decide whether your website was cited.

Anthropic also describes its crawlers in its help center. As of this writing it lists separate user agents for training data collection (ClaudeBot), user-directed fetches (Claude-User), and search quality (Claude-SearchBot), and says site owners can control them with robots.txt (Anthropic Help Center; search for its crawler article). Check that page for the current list, because names and purposes can change.

What is not public

We have not found Anthropic documentation naming which search index sits behind the web search tool or how it orders results, so we do not claim one. We also cannot tell you how the model decides between two similar sources. What we can do is observe the sources it cites for real queries.

What Claude tends to need from you

Regardless of the exact search backend, a model that quotes sources needs pages that can be found, read, and quoted. That leads to the same basics as for any AI engine:

robots.txt decisions

If you block all Anthropic user agents, you remove those routes to your content. If you only want to block training, you can block ClaudeBot and leave Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User allowed, according to Anthropic's description. Read the current documentation and test your robots.txt before relying on it. Our robots.txt guide has examples. Note that blocking the wrong agent is a common accidental cause of invisibility.

Does Claude recommend local businesses?

It can, when asked and when search is on. Whether it does for your category and city depends on what the search returns and how the model summarizes it. Claude's replies often hedge or suggest that the user check reviews and verify details. That is not a failure. It is a reason to make your verifiable facts easy to find.

How to test it

  1. Open Claude with web search enabled.
  2. Ask questions as a customer would: "What are good [service] companies in [city]?" and a specific need.
  3. Note whether it searched, which sources it listed, and whether your business or site appears.
  4. Repeat in new chats. Answers vary.
  5. Look at the sources it did cite and see whether you are present, accurately, on each.

The Claude apps include features, such as memory and project context, that may shape answers, so test from a clean account or a fresh session.

How SearchSignal measures Claude

We call Anthropic's API with the web search tool enabled, send the question as a plain user message with no system prompt, and pass an approximate location when a city is given. We check the answer text for your name and the returned sources for your domain. Because this is the API and not the Claude app, results may differ from what you see on claude.ai. The details are on the methodology page, and the free check includes Claude at no extra charge.

Bottom line

Claude can cite the web, and the way to be cited is the same unglamorous work that serves every other engine: be findable, be clear, be consistent, and be present on the sources that matter in your field. Measure first, change things, and measure again.

Common questions

Is web search always on in Claude?

Not necessarily. Availability and defaults depend on the product and settings, and may change. Check the current Claude help pages.

Does Claude browse my site in real time?

It can fetch a page when a user-directed request calls for it. Anthropic's description of Claude-User covers that case.

Can I stop Claude from training on my site but still be cited?

Anthropic's documentation describes separate agents for training and search, so you can set rules for each. Read the current page and test your robots.txt.

Do Claude's answers differ by region?

Location can be passed to the search tool. We pass an approximate location when a city is provided.
